"I don’t want to be successful and fulfilled in my career," says no one ever! Truly, I haven't met a person who doesn’t aspire to excel in their professional life.

But in our quest to build careers that are not just successful but also fulfilling, we often stumble over our own habits. These are not just quirks, but deeply ingrained patterns of behavior that can significantly hinder our growth and satisfaction. Let’s dive into some of these common habits and explore how we can move beyond them.

Playing It ‘Safe’

Avoiding risk is comfortable but often caps your potential. Taking calculated risks, on the other hand, is essential for breakthroughs in any career, regardless of position, rank or title. Start small if you need to, but start pushing the boundaries of what you think is possible.

Operating from a Scarcity Mindset

Viewing the world as having limited opportunities leads to fear-driven decisions. Instead, cultivate an abundance mindset: there is plenty out there for everyone, and the right opportunities will come if you're open to them and prepared for them.

Believing, Thinking, and Playing Small

If you limit your beliefs about what you can achieve, your achievements will never surpass your expectations. Expand your self-concept and embrace the possibilities that come with thinking big—your goals should scare you a little and excite you a lot!

Undervaluing Your Competence

One of the most insidious habits that can derail a promising career is the tendency to undervalue one's own competence. This often manifests as Imposter Syndrome, where despite evident successes, you may feel like a fraud, fearing that one day others will discover you aren’t as capable as they think. This not only undermines your self-confidence but also hinders your willingness to pursue new opportunities that require you to step out of your comfort zone.

To combat this, start by cataloging your achievements. Maintain an "achievement log" that includes both big wins and smaller victories. This tangible record serves as a constant reminder of your capabilities when doubts begin to creep in (they often do when you are attempting something new). Reflect on this log before meetings or during times of uncertainty to reinforce your self-belief.

Not Entertaining Your Curiosity

Curiosity leads to learning and innovation, which are key drivers in any industry, rank, or position. Ignite your curiosity by asking questions, exploring new ideas, and being bold enough to challenge the status quo. This will keep you relevant in your field.

Shying Away from Building Key Relationships

No man or woman is an island! Absolutely no one succeeds in a silo. The relationships you build can open doors and provide support in ways you might not foresee. Instead, invest time in networking intentionally, not just upwards but across and downwards too.

Underestimating the Power of Your Voice and Visibility

Being the best-kept secret in your organization won’t advance your career. Increase your visibility by sharing your achievements and ideas. Speak up in meetings, publish your thoughts, ask for what you need and let your voice be a tool for your advancement.

Lack of Self-Care

Last but definitely not least– you deserve to be cared for. You cannot serve from an empty cup. Embrace self-love and implement self-care and nurturing habits to take care of and sustain you.

Redefining from Small Play to Big Wins

Shifting from the brand of 'playing it small' to aiming for 'big wins' requires a fundamental change in mindset—from what's comfortable to what's courageous. Your career should be a VIP experience—an experience where you are Valued, Impactful, Promoted, and Paid equitably.

It’s time to own and step into your power, advocate for your value, and never shrink back again. This is your career, redefined—where you are not just participating but leading and thriving. By addressing these habits, you are not only navigating a path to success; you are paving it with intent, authenticity,  integrity, and, importantly, immense satisfaction.
