Are you leveraging the biggest asset you have for career success—your personal brand?
Amid fluctuating corporate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and influential voices questioning the sustainability and the future of these initiatives, it's natural to experience a rollercoaster of emotions. For those whose narratives include overcoming barriers of marginalization, these shifting sands can reawaken feelings of uncertainty and alienation. You may have been conditioned to think that blending in and conforming is the ticket to your career progression. Amidst this turmoil, such a notion may seem validated—that success hinges on dimming your authenticity to fit the mold of your work spaces. However, I'm here to debunk that myth with the truth; conformity is not the gateway to career excellence. My own experiences, alongside those I've had the privilege of mentoring and coaching, serve as a testament to the power of authenticity.
The significance of standing out cannot be overstated, and there's no more effective way to do so than through a personal brand that truly represents the authentic you. Your personal brand is a representation of your genuine self, your beliefs, and how you present to the world—essentially, it's your career DNA, distinguishing you in a world prone to uniformity.
Now, it's time for some introspection—is your personal brand functioning as an asset or a liability? (I couldn't resist, blame it on the CPA in me...lol)
Let’s dive into the heart of it.
Consider the analogy of your personal brand as an asset. Like any asset, its value (note I am not talking about your self-worth) is determined by how well it’s managed. Are you leveraging your personal brand to showcase your strengths, your passion, and your unique perspective? Or is your authentic brand a hidden gem waiting to be activated and discovered? (FYI -regardless of whether you're actively steering your brand, you have a personal brand; the question is, does it authentically represent you and where you want to grow?)
An asset, by definition, is something valuable that an individual or entity owns and that is expected to provide a future benefit. Within the context of personal branding, the combined forces of authenticity and impact serve as key currencies to determine value. Your difference and the difference you create are your superpowers. When you align your personal brand with your true self, your values, and your vision, you are better positioned to create impact, which in turn positions you to radiate, and attract opportunities, connections, and roles that resonate with your genuine aspirations for your career.
The three pivotal drivers that significantly enhance your brand's value (again distinct from your personal worth) are what I refer to as the 3 key drivers to career impact – value, visibility and voice:
Value – Identify and promote your unique strengths and capabilities. What problems do you uniquely solve? This is your professional value.
Voice- How are you leveraging your voice to communicate your professional value, to influence and to lead in your workspaces?
Visibility - This is about how you're seen in your professional spaces. Are you positioning yourself in spaces where your contributions are recognized and valued?
By embracing these three drivers in your career strategy, your personal brand can shift from being a liability or a latent asset to a powerful tool in navigating your career path with authenticity, courage and confidence, which in return increases your prospects of realizing a rewarding and fulfilling career.
