Over the years as I mentor other women I see too many us shrinking, dimming our lights or playing small in our careers even when we have the capabilities, skills, perspectives or solutions to share that can make a difference for our teams, clients or organizations.
As a result of this posture we create a mediocre personal brand that then negatively impacts our career advancement, career fulfillment and our money.
I believe that personal branding starts from the inside out! There is inner work to be done so that how you show up aligns not only with who you are authentically but also aligns with the vision you have for your career and life.
And so today I am sharing with you 3 mindset shifts to help you shift the way in which you show up in your working world.
If your mindset is not supportive of the career, life and legacy that you want to achieve here are 3 important mindset shifts that will catapult your personal brand and ultimately propel your career:
You will need an unwavering belief in you. An unwavering belief in who you are. It is unreasonable to expect others to champion you, choose you, promote you, pay you more when you do not believe in yourself. Believing in yourself is fundamental and fuels the story that you tell yourself about who you are, what your capabilities are, and what your place is in your organization and in the world. Take ownership of your internal narrative. To the extent the story given to you was not empowering - you have an opportunity and a responsibility to reframe it.
Someone else is not progressing when you do not show up BOLD. When you do not share your perspectives or solutions someone else is not making the progress that they need to make. It does not matter which industry you work in or what your position or title is.. Organizations or Brands provide solutions. You were hired to influence that solution. So when you shrink you are robbing someone else the opportunity to progress. When you dim your light you do not come across as confident and so you may miss out on career impacting opportunities to share your your knowledge and expertise.
Your career should not be on cruise control. You need to be in the driver seat actively steering, braking or pressing gas when you need to. You are responsible for the progression of your career. The narrative that is told in the rooms - you know that important room where all the high profile opportunities are discussed, where promotions are decided, where salary is determined, where layoffs are discussed - yes that room - you are responsible for that narrative and it is important that you own it.
