5 things to unlearn to show up and live your brand
Are you constantly coming up short on realizing your career (and life) goals? Do you often succumb to an internal narrative that fuels fear and self doubt and that blocks you from realizing your full potential?
What I have discovered along my journey is that the key to achieving the success that you desire is in showing up. Showing up boldly and unapologetically and using your voice. Showing up and voicing your opinions, perspectives, your insights and your solutions.
Sometimes showing up will require you to unlearn some things in order to move forward toward the career and life you desire. These lessons were usually learnt in your formative years, through your life experiences, from your family cultures, or by labels placed on you by others (including from those with good intentions) and that was internally adopted. What do you need to unlearn that’s keeping you from showing up in your brilliance?
You have the power to change the trajectory and show up in your brilliance. Sometimes letting go is the hardest part, but you can do it. Here are five things to unlearn to launch your best you in and beyond your career:
Your worth and identity is connected to your career title, salary or position. No one, absolutely no one can pay you your worth. You get paid for your career or professional value - in essence you get paid based on your expertise, your skills, strengths and solutions that you bring to the table and to your organization.
Your past habits and experiences dictates your future career success. While this may hold true for situations that may require a knowledge of and is dependent on your credit or life history, you have the absolute power to change the trajectory of your career and life. To future proof your career (and life) focus on building a compelling and authentic personal brand and cultivating habits that equips you to thrive forward.
“It” needs to be perfect before you can show up or move forward. The “it” referred to here can be an idea for a new project or possibly a new strategy or a solution that you want to present to your boss, leadership, or a client as an example. Yes, you want to be and come across as competent and showcase that you do know what you are doing. But “it” does not have to be perfect. Perfection will keep you stuck! Instead, focus on excellence. Excellence speaks to putting forth your best effort.
You have to be in a high visibility role to create impact. You can create impact from any position because you can add value from every position by leveraging your unique strengths and solutions that speaks to your organization’s pain points or overall objectives.
To succeed you must work hard. There are other factors contributing to your success aside from work itself. Yes, your performance is your ticket into the arena, but a focus on working hard by itself will not secure the promotion, the position, the visibility, or your desired impact. The key is in building a compelling personal brand and living your brand every day and that brand game plan should include strategies to attain visibility, exposure to key projects or assignments that directly speaks to the pain points or the objectives of your organization or your clients/customers.
