Authentic Ambition: Building a Career That Reflects Your True Self
I did not realize I was burnt out until it nearly killed me. Years of chasing my ‘shoulds’ and other people’s version of success had left me exhausted, unfulfilled, and questioning my very worth. I was so busy conforming to external expectations that I lost sight of my own values and passions. That’s when I knew something had to change. I needed to redefine my ambition to build a career that truly reflected my authentic self—one that reflected the lanes I wanted to make an impact in and one that brought work-life harmony. Here’s how I did it and how you can too.
Embrace Your Unique Identity
The first step towards authentic ambition is embracing your unique identity. For years, I tried to fit into a mold that wasn’t made for me. It wasn’t until I began celebrating my differences—my culture, my femininity, being an immigrant, my circumstances—and letting them guide my professional journey that I started to feel truly fulfilled. Your experiences, background, and values shape who you are—don’t shy away from them. Embrace your uniqueness because they are the foundation of your perspectives and your ideas.
Redefine Ambition Beyond Money and Power
I am not suggesting that you dim down your ambition. What I am recommending is that you redefine it to align with who you are—your values, the impact you want to make on the world, and the joy you want to experience in your life. During my crisis, I realized that success for me was less about job titles and more about taking risks, making an impact, and unleashing my purpose in my career. I decided I was not going to compromise my authenticity anymore and my career shifted.
Align Your Career Goals with Personal Values
One of the most crucial aspects of authentic ambition is ensuring that your career goals align with your personal values. Take time to reflect on what matters most to you. For me, it was uplifting and encouraging others to be and do their best, driving results for my stakeholders, and maintaining work-life harmony. Whatever your values are, make sure your career path supports them. When your work aligns with your personal values, it becomes more meaningful and fulfilling.
Set Intentional, Action-Infused Goals
Setting goals is essential for any ambitious professional, but with authentic ambition, these goals need to be intentional. Rather than setting goals based solely on external expectations or societal standards, focus on what genuinely excites and motivates you. Break down your long-term vision into smaller, achievable steps that are aligned with your authentic self. This approach has helped me stay focused and motivated on my path.
Build a Supportive Network
Surround yourself with people who support you and your career aspirations. I found that having a network of mentors, peers, and advocates who understood and appreciated my unique journey made all the difference. Having a supportive network helps reinforce your commitment to staying true to yourself and provides encouragement and advice when needed.
Advocate for Yourself
Authentic ambition involves confidently advocating for yourself and your career goals. Don’t be afraid to voice your aspirations, seek out opportunities that align with your values, and negotiate for what you deserve. Standing up for yourself is a critical part of ensuring your career reflects your true self (Listen, I could write a whole book on this one!). I learned that my voice mattered, and so does yours.
Embrace Continuous Growth
An authentic career journey is one of continuous growth and learning. Embrace opportunities for personal and professional development that align with your values and interests. This growth mindset will help you adapt to changes, overcome challenges, and stay aligned with your authentic ambitions. For me, continuous growth and entertaining my curiosity have been key to staying motivated and fulfilled.
Practice Self-Compassion
Pursuing authentic ambition means acknowledging that the journey won’t always be smooth. Practice self-compassion by being kind to yourself during setbacks and celebrating your achievements, no matter how small. Self-compassion will help you stay resilient and motivated on your path. I’ve learned to treat myself with the same kindness I offer others, and it’s made all the difference.
Authentic ambition as it relates to your career is about more than just climbing the corporate ladder or achieving societal definitions of success. It’s more than the C-Suite role, notoriety, or the fancy car. Instead, it’s about creating a career that is a true reflection of who you are, grounded in your values, and aligned with your unique strengths and desires. By embracing your unique identity and setting intentional goals, you can build a career that not only brings success but also genuine fulfillment and joy because the most successful career is one that allows you to be your true self every step of the way.
Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve learned that true success comes from within. When you redefine ambition to reflect your authentic self, you create a career that’s not only successful but also deeply satisfying. We each have the autonomy to decide what ambition means to us—make it count.
