AUTHENTICITY: BREAKING FREE FROM “CODE-SWITCHING”
For women and women of color, this “blending “ can take on a whole different meaning. It often means shifting how we talk, how we behave, even how we present ourselves, to fit in with different cultural norms. Now, while this can help us survive in places where there's cultural bias, over time we lose who we really are. And that can have a deep and damaging impact on your personal brand and ultimately your career.
Sometimes it necessary for us to “code-switch” and move through our environments like a chameleon, blending in with our surroundings. But for women and women of color, this “blending “ can take on a whole different meaning. It often means shifting how we talk, how we behave, even how we present ourselves, to fit in with different cultural norms. Now, while this can help us survive in places where there's cultural bias, over time we lose who we really are. And that can have a deep and damaging impact on your personal brand and ultimately your career.
So, what is this code-switching thing really? Well, has a foundation in linguistics, but now has expanded to include how we behave, how we look, how we communicate in our spaces and in particular our working worlds. It's often used by people from marginalized communities as they move between different social or professional environments. Now, while code-switching can help with communication and connection, it also points to a deeper problem - the pressure to fit in, to be like everyone else, at the expense of being true to yourself. This pressure can be extra heavy for professional women of color, who might feel like they have to hide their true identities to be seen as 'professional.' This constant shifting between identities can be mentally exhausting and damaging. It requires being constantly on guard and self-censoring. Plus, it can make you feel invisible and stifle your authentic self-expression, which is not good for your personal branding.
To break free from “code-switching”, it is important to embrace your authenticity and be true to your own self. That's a key part of personal branding. It's what make you stand out from the crowd. When we're authentic, we bring our whole self to our work and the spaces we enter, sharing our experiences, ideas, and talents.
Here are a few steps towards embracing authenticity in your professional life:
Self-Acceptance: Accepting who you are - your flaws, your experiences, your talents, your gifts, your desires …all parts of you. Understand that your cultural heritage, your personal experiences, they're valuable and are major influencers that shape your unique perspective.
Creating a Safe Space: Take the initiative to cultivate a professional environment where diversity is valued and where all voices are heard. Encourage conversations about diversity and inclusion on your individual teams which can inspire others to also show up as their authentic self.
Leverage Your Strengths: Your unique strengths and talents are a big part of your authenticity. Identify them, boldly showcase them in your working spaces.
Set Boundaries: Don't tolerate behavior that make you uncomfortable. Make it clear that you deserve respect at all times.
Use Your Voice -Express Yourself: Don't be afraid to share your ideas, opinions, and experiences. Diversity in perspectives leads to change, progress and innovation. Additionally, your voice can contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant work culture.
Breaking free from code-switching isn't something that happens overnight. It needs patience, resilience, and a strong belief in the value of your authentic self. As you journey towards embracing authenticity, remember that your unique perspectives and experiences aren't just what set you apart—they're also what make you an invaluable asset to any team. Embrace the power of authenticity, and watch your career thrive.
