Redefining your personal brand is a powerful tool that can take your brand from being your greatest liability to being your greatest asset.
Personal Brand is an asset
When we think about our personal brands, oftentimes we tend to think of it as something that's separate from us. But what if your greatest asset was actually just a part of you? What if the key to redefining your personal brand wasn't changing who you are at your core, but rather just unveiling and showing up as who you are authentically with courage and confidence?
It's time to start thinking about our personal brands in this way—as something inherent rather than extrinsic!
Your personal brand is the sum of all the things that make you stand out as an individual—your personality traits, skills, experiences, and interests. It’s what makes people want to work with you, buy from you or quite frankly be in your presence.
Let's be honest—what you're looking for in this world is to feel like you belong. You want to be authentic. You want to be recognized for who you really are, and not have to hide behind a façade of perfection.
But what happens when your personal brand is not helping you to achieve your goals? What if your personal brand is holding you back? What if it's preventing you from getting the job or clients you want? What happens when it becomes your greatest liability instead of your greatest asset?
Sometimes we're not aware of how our own actions and behaviors affect other people. Our actions are often influenced by our environment, circumstances, and our past experiences.
Redefining your personal brand is a powerful tool that can take your brand from being your greatest liability to being your greatest asset.
Quite simply it’s about changing the way you show up and ultimately changing the way how people think of you by redefining the lens through which you see and define yourself…redefining your narrative and then showing up and doing things differently!
When you redefine your personal brand, you can take control of your narrative and your past experiences that may be informing your personal brand and make them work for you instead of against you. When you authentically redefine your personal brand, then other people will see you through a different lens—and understand the true value of your contributions to the world around you!
To do this, however, you must know what your brand is currently saying about you and what it needs to be saying instead.
First, assess what your current brand is saying about you. Are you perceived as dependable? Knowledgeable? Insightful? Resourceful? What would others say if someone asked them about you? What words would they use?
Once you have assessed what your current brand is saying about you, determine if it is in alignment with who you were created to be and how you want to be perceived. Does their perception align/fit with the impression that you'd like them to have of you?
What is the impact you want to have on others and on the world? What do you want your legacy to be? Is your personal brand empowered to achieve the impact and the legacy you want to mark on the world?
Does your current brand create exponential opportunities for you? If not, then your personal brand is most likely a liability and it's time for a rebranding!
Your rebranding strategy needs to align with who you are authentically. It also needs to align with your goals. For example, if you want to be perceived as a great leader (regardless of whether you are operating in the professional or entrepreneurial space), then it makes sense to work on embodying the attributes of a great leader – discipline, courage, empathy, humility, discernment, commitment, just to name a few, and ensuring that every element of your personal brand reflects these attributes—in fact and appearance, visually and audibly.
So if there is any lesson to learn here, let it be this: there are always opportunities to redefine ourselves and our personal brands. These opportunities come every day in small ways and big ways alike; they are everywhere all around us. Redefining your personal brand is a journey waiting for you to choose.
